History
At Blueberry Park Primary School, we aim to make History exciting, meaningful, and accessible for all pupils. We want children to develop curiosity about the past as they develop their understanding of how history shapes the world they live in today. Our curriculum introduces children to the core historical concepts of cause and consequence, continuity and change, similarity and difference, and historical significance. Pupils will learn to ask perceptive questions, analyse sources, make comparisons, and form reasoned conclusions. Pupils will learn how historians use sources to construct interpretations of the past, and will handle artefacts, examine photographs, read historical accounts, and explore digital archives to develop their own interpretations.
In the Early Years, children explore the past through the Understanding the World area of learning.
They learn about history by:
- Talking about themselves, their families, and how they have changed over time
- Listening to stories set in the past and using role play
- Looking at old and new objects and noticing differences
- Learning the reasons behind celebrations and special events
- Using simple time-related vocabulary such as past, present, old, and new
In Key Stage 1, children learn about the past through familiar ideas—significant people, important events, and changes within living memory. They begin to use simple historical vocabulary and explore stories, artefacts, and images to find out about earlier times, comparing them to the present day.
In Key Stage 2, pupils develop a stronger sense of chronology and study a wider range of British and world history from prehistory to the modern day. They learn to ask thoughtful questions, use evidence to support their ideas, and make connections between different periods, civilisations, and cultures.
We encourage wider enrichment of History through field trips, workshops and visitors to the school.
