Maths
Welcome to the Mathematics section of Blueberry Park Primary School! Here, we embrace a mastery approach to teaching mathematics, using the ARK Maths Mastery scheme. Our curriculum is crafted to ensure that every pupil gains a deep understanding of mathematical concepts through a structured framework that incorporates concrete, pictorial, and abstract methods.
Our mathematics lessons are organised into six engaging parts, allowing for a thorough exploration of each topic. This structure not only introduces new concepts but also encourages pupils to interact with mathematics in various ways. By incorporating practical resources, visual aids, and formal written methods, we create a vibrant learning environment that nurtures problem-solving skills and mathematical reasoning.
In the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), children embark on their mathematical journey by developing number sense through the Mastering Number programme, supported by ARK for space, shape, and measure. From the start, pupils are encouraged to express their reasoning and test their understanding, establishing a solid foundation for their future learning.
For pupils in Years 1 to 6, we conduct daily mathematics lessons that reinforce the six-part lesson model. Our instruction is designed to anticipate and address common misconceptions, ensuring that all pupils can effectively practise their knowledge and skills. By presenting mathematical concepts in diverse formats, we promote fluency and competence, enabling pupils to connect different areas of mathematics.
Children are taught times tables through the Number sense programme in preparation for the multiplication check in Year 4. Our goal is for pupils to master mathematics, allowing them to represent concepts in multiple ways, communicate using appropriate mathematical language, and apply their understanding to new and unfamiliar problems. We assess progression through a combination of formal assessments, teacher judgement based on children's written work, and verbal feedback. Day-to-day assessment enables teachers to swiftly identify children who need extra support, with same-day intervention conducted. Termly assessments are administered using published schemes, and the data gathered is used to inform future planning. High-quality CPD is delivered through the Maths Hub, ensuring that all staff receive the latest and most effective insight into developing maths pedagogy. Through this approach, we aim to cultivate a generation of confident mathematicians who are well-prepared for future challenges.
